Requiescat on base

We have received word that Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, the most glorious rookie ever to briefly blaze through the sky of professional baseball (his career was only 1.5 seasons long) has died suddenly; apparently he was crushed by a motor vehicle under which he was working. He was 56.

Words fail me. This has been an accursed year.

Only a true Detroiter can know the depth with which we mourn.

I saw him pitch in 1976 when I was 15 years old. I'll never forget him.

God rest you, Mark.
